Winter snack: my super date and maca protein balls

During winter, it’s easy to snack on unhealthy, nutrient-poor foods like chocolate and chippies, especially when you’re feeling sluggish and low on energy. All you want to do is sit on the couch!

But try and set aside 10 minutes because that’s all you need to make these super nutritious and tasty protein balls. Once you make them the first time, you’ll be addicted because they’re so easy and so good.

Why maca? This high protein superfood of the Incas is sometimes described as the “Peruvian ginseng.” It’s claimed benefits include helping mood swings and hormone imbalances, libido, the immune system, energy levels and skin conditions. All great benefits for the middle of winter blues!

 Ingredients:

2 handfuls dates (about 16)

100g walnuts (activated if possible)

50g (2 scoops) plant protein powder

2 tbs shredded coconut

1 tbs coconut oil

1 tbs chia seeds

1 tbs maca powder

1 tbs sunflower seeds

1 tsp vanilla powder

1 tsp cinnamon

Shredded coconut/chia seeds to roll

Method:

Place all ingredients in a food processor or thermomix and blitz. If the mixture is a little oily, add more of the “dry” protein powder. If it’s too dry, add some of the more “wet” coconut oil. To test the consistency, roll a small amount between your palms.

To help roll the balls, put the mixture in the fridge for 30 minutes to cool it down.
